Controversial Squid Game, Mr. A had to delete 4,000 phone numbers of unknown individuals

The South Korean drama series that is currently hot on Netflix, Squid Game, is embroiled in controversy.

Mediacorp News reports, the series tells the story of a group of individuals who are desperate due to lack of money, willing to risk their lives to join a dangerous game just to win cash prizes.

The show was so popular that it became the first K-drama to reach number one on the Netflix charts in the United States.

The popularity of the show however troubles an individual.

In the drama, popular actor Gong Yoo, invites Sung Ki Hoon (played by Lee Jung Jae) to take part in the game by giving him a contact card with a phone number.

Apparently, the phone number was not designed solely for the series but belonged to someone identified as Mr. A. Since the drama first aired on September 17 on Netflix, he has often received calls and text messages from suspicious fans of the drama.

According to Mr. A, who has been using the phone number for over 10 years, he gets calls day and night to the detriment of daily life.

He received so many calls that his phone died due to running out of battery, said Mr. A, which adds he needs to delete over 4,000 numbers.

“At first I didn’t know why, then my friend told me that my number appeared on Squid Game,” he said.

Although there were only eight digits in the number listed, as opposed to the usual 10 or 11, the publishing crew made the mistake of only deleting the first three digits, namely the city area code, and not the middle or end number.

As a result, when someone dials those eight numbers without a city code, the phone call will remain connected.

Netflix stated it was contacting Mr. A and worked with the Siren Pictures publishing team, to resolve the issue.

For the mistake, Netflix could be fined up to 50 million won (S $ 57,400).
