The UK government has proposed a major overhaul of how people qualify for permanent residency under Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), shifting from a standard five-year route to a new “earned settlement” model that — as things stand — sets a baseline residence requirement of ten years for most work- and long-stay visa holders. Under the proposed model, applicants would need to show not only continuous lawful residence but also demonstrated “contribution” (e.g. National Insurance record and stable income), integration (such as English skills), and a clean criminal and immigration history.
However, the draft also proposes “accelerated” routes for certain categories — for example, high-earners or key workers (e.g. doctors, nurses, teachers), who may still qualify for ILR in a shorter timeframe, depending on earnings and role. At the same time, the consultation suggests that those who fail to meet the new standards — including some on medium-skilled visas, migrants with gaps in contributions or adverse records, or those arriving via irregular routes — might face much longer waits (or possibly never qualify), potentially stretching the waiting period up to 15, 20 or even 30 years
