Seed Sovereignty

Life begins from seed; they are the foundation of all food systems. To have the ability to produce, preserve and grow one’s seed, is the joy of all small-scale farmers, who play a pivotal role in feeding the nation.

In Kenya, over 80% of seeds used by smallholder farmers are sourced from ‘informal’, or farmer-managed seed systems. The ability for farmers to grow, harvest, and preserve their seeds and share knowledge among people, makes food systems more resilient against climate change, pests, and pathogens.

Seed Savers Network uses, the “farmer-to-farmer” extension model to train farmers on agroecology, and facilitate the spread and adoption of seed saving, regenerative farming practices, and food sovereignty ideals.
