Japan’s prime minister Shigeru Ishiba will hold on to the job… but will effectively lead a fragile minority government.

Monday's vote in parliament went to a runoff for the first time in 30 years, as no candidate was able to get majority support in the first round.

Ishiba took office last month and called a snap poll

But his Liberal Democratic Party and its coalition partner Komeito won the biggest bloc of seats in the election but lost majority it held in a decade.

Which means he will have to rely on smaller parties to push through his agenda.

Ishiba got 221 votes, well clear of his nearest challenger, ex-PM Yoshihiko Noda, the head of the main opposition Constitutional Democratic Party.

But that’s but still short of a majority in the 465-member lower house

And if that isn’t bad enough, he is up against a host of problems.

There’s domestic pressure to bring down the cost of living.

Tensions with rivals like China and North Korea are increasing

And then with Donald Trump back, protectionism will also be back.

Which means higher tariffs to contend with

Ishiba’s immediate challenge will be to get a supplementary budget for the fiscal year through March.

There’s public and political pressure to raise spending on welfare and arrest rising prices.
