Описание к видео #cop30

From Kabaena, to Amazon.
From small island, to the tropical rainforest.
From indigenous communities, to policymakers.

Currently, the COP30 World Climate Summit is underway in Belem, Brazil, right on the edge of the Amazon rainforest. The Energy Transition, shifting from fossil fuels to clean energy, is a key climate action goal discussed at COP30.

Electric cars are often celebrated as new hope amid the climate crisis—a promise that the future of energy can be completely clean.

But behind the battery energy that powers the world is nickel extracted from small islands like Kabaena, Southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia, whose land and forests are now stripped away and whose seas are losing their clarity. On this island, the promise of greenery has given way to scars: eroding slopes, slowly fading, and toxic coastlines.

The Bajau people—the world's last sea-nomadic people—who inhabit the coast of Kabaena, can no longer dive and fish in the waters of Baliara Village because the seawater is contaminated with nickel. Flooding has occurred repeatedly in recent years.

Satya Bumi's research revealed that the urine of Kabaena residents contains nickel levels tens of times higher than the FAO and WHO standards, and is also contaminated with other heavy metals, such as cadmium and lead. Kabaena Islanders also suffer from respiratory problems and skin diseases, especially in villages adjacent to the mine.

Local communities, particularly the Moronene and Bugis tribes, have been evicted from their lands without adequate compensation. Mining concession expansion has displaced entire communities, with little to no consultation between the mining company and the affected residents.

As world leaders speak about the future of the climate in the Amazon, Kabaena sends a more honest whisper from its shores:

Climate solutions must not be born from the destruction of small islands, must not submerge the identities and living spaces of those closest to the sea.

The energy transition must protect, not sacrifice.
