"There is no concept of Valentine's Day in Islam. Despite living in an Islamic society, we have allowed the degeneration of women through this practice. I would like to take this opportunity to demand that we should boycott the vulgarity and licentiousness that is being spread in the name of Valentine's Day."

We don't accept any cultural practice that takes us towards vulgarity. We only accept the practices and mores of the (Prophet) Muhammad and we have always endeavoured to follow it and will continue to do so in the future."

STORYLINE:
Dozens of mostly female activists of a right-wing Islamist party gathered outside the Karachi Press Club to protest against the celebration of Valentine's Day on Tuesday.
The veiled women labelled the celebration as a Western practice aimed at corrupting Muslim youth, and burnt several Valentine's Day cards as they chanted slogans denouncing the tradition.
"Despite living in an Islamic society, we have allowed the degeneration of women through this practice. I would like to take this opportunity to demand that we should boycott the vulgarity and licentiousness that is being spread in the name of Valentine's Day," said Mehnaz Kanwal, an activist of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI), the right wing Islamist party that organised the protest.
The protest has taken place for the last few years as resistance has grown against the day amongst activists.
"We don't accept any cultural practice that takes us towards vulgarity. We only accept the practices and the way of life of the (Prophet) Muhammad and we have always endeavoured to follow it and will continue to do so in the future," said Shabbir Abu Talib, a local JUI leader.
