Does Life imprisonment means punishment for life ?

In this video we are discussing- What does it mean when a court gives the punishment of Life Imprisonment to a convict. Does a life sentence actually mean till the end of one’s life? Or is it till 14 years or 20 years. We have talked about all this and also the important provisions in Indian Penal Code & Criminal Code regarding life imprisonment and its commutation.

It is not written in the Constitution of India that the sentence of life imprisonment will be 14, 20 or 30 years. Life imprisonment to the offender means that he will have to serve his sentence in jail until he dies.
The reason behind the punishment of 14 years.

In order to reduce the prison term, a specific order has to be passed by the appropriate government under CrPC Section 432 of the Constitution.
Also, under Section 433-A of the CrPC of the Constitution, the state government has got the right to reduce or suspend the sentence of the prisoners. Whatever be the punishment, whether of a few months, years or life imprisonment, the state governments have full freedom to request for its reduction.
