What sparked the controversy

In the India-Pakistan match of Asia Cup 2025 (September 14 in Dubai), Indian players did not shake hands with the Pakistani team after the match (and at the toss) as is the usual custom.

India’s captain, Suryakumar Yadav, dedicated the win to India’s armed forces, referencing recent tensions (including a terror attack in Pahalgam in Kashmir). Pakistan viewed the lack of handshake as unsportsmanlike and an intentional snub.


Pakistan’s reaction & what they demanded

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) lodged a formal complaint with the ICC, claiming that match referee Andy Pycroft had instructed that captains avoid shaking hands, which they saw as inappropriate.

PCB demanded that Pycroft be removed from officiating further matches in Asia Cup.

Pakistan also threatened to boycott their next match (against UAE) if their demand wasn’t met. They delayed leaving their hotel ahead of that match, as part of the protest.


ICC’s response

The ICC rejected Pakistan’s demand to remove Andy Pycroft as match referee.

In its response, ICC said Pycroft was following clear instructions from the ACC venue manager regarding the handshake situation. They said the decision to manage the situation (including advising or allowing no handshake) was under the purview of tournament organisers / venue management rather than the match referee alone.

The ICC also indicated that Pakistan did not provide sufficient evidence or documentation for their complaints when asked. Thus, the complaint was considered “baseless” in a formal ICC reply.


Outcome

The Pakistani team eventually played their match against UAE, although it started about one hour late because of the dispute.

Pycroft remained the match referee for Pakistan's subsequent games.

PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi said Pycroft had later admitted the “handshake incident should not have happened” (or that there was a miscommunication) but that didn’t lead to his removal.
