Battle of Peleliu - Bloody Nose Ridge

The fighting seen on the island of Peleliu from September 15th - November 27th 1944 was some of the most vicious experienced during the war in the Pacific. The Japanese defenders abandoned the banzai style of attack, instead digging in for a long siege to the last man.

The Umurbrogol mountains housed their extensive network of caves and tunnels, and the US Marines were tasked with eliminating them one by one.
The "pocket" proved a "meat grinder". They sustained severe casualties.
