Attending a tennis match is different from other sporting events. Make sure you're not violating proper etiquette with these tips.

Step 1: Dress nicely
Dress nicely. While jeans aren't technically banned, a smart casual look and comfortable shoes follow proper etiquette.

Step 2: Sit down and shut up
Stay seated and remain quiet during play. If you absolutely must speak, keep it to a whisper. Wait until play has stopped to visit the restroom or snack bar.

Step 3: Respect the players
Make sure the ball is dead before you react: A premature cheer or groan could cause havoc for a player.

Step 4: Be reserved
Be more reserved than you would at a team sporting event. Don't heckle the players; make calls; shout advice; applaud errors; abuse the chair umpire; or lead a chant.

Tip
Do clap enthusiastically after a long rally.

Step 5: Show sportsmanship
Applaud whoever makes a great shot, even if it's not the player you're rooting for. Because proper etiquette while watching a tennis match is all about good sportsmanship.
