Richard Messner was born on December 18, 1907 in Manhattan, New York although he grew up in Ridgefield Park, New Jersey. When he was around 15, he started performing with his brothers as "The Five Messner Brothers" with himself on piano, Johnny Messner on violin and clarinet, Charlie Messner on woodwinds, Bill Messner on drums and Fred Messner on Violin. This group would make their broadcast radio debut in 1923 on WJZ (which would become part of NBC) when Dick was only 16.

He would form his own band in 1935, calling it the "Dick Messner Orchestra", although recordings would be credited as "Dick Messner and His Orchestra". It appears he only had two recording sessions, both in 1935, producing 11 songs in total. From what I've read, the band would continue to perform up to World War II. I've also read that he left and joined back with his brother Johnny in around 1938 although I can find no mention of him in Johnny Messner's personnel. What is for certain is Dick was active in music performing and broadcasting around the region until the big strike in 1942.

This song is "The Oregon Trail", was originally written by Billy Hill and Peter De Rose and is the first song Dick Messner's orchestra ever recorded. The band personnel is unknown, however Johnny (John) Messner was responsible for putting some great vocals on the track. The Recording took place for the American Record Corporation in New York City on September 11, 1935.
