Just when I thought the work was finished, I put everything back together, poured some coolant in and noticed a significant narrow streaming leak. I couldn't see exactly where it was coming from, but suspicions lead me to believe it was from the newly installed thermostat. I removed everything back and found I had overtightened the bottom housing bolt, it was at a peculiar angle where I couldn't see or have a good feel for it while tightening which probably led me to overcompensating. It didn't help that I didn't remove the alternator belt just loosened it to have better access. Once I got to the housing, I saw it. I've since replaced it with a new one, made sure to remove the belt this time around and carefully screwed the bolts back in. No leaks this time around and the cooling system is just fine.
