Sultan Muhammad bin Tughlaq, often remembered as the "Mad King," left his mark on history with erratic decisions that led to both brilliance and chaos. One of his most infamous acts was forcing the entire population of Delhi to march 1,200 kilometres to Daulatabad, a fortress perched on a basalt hill in Maharashtra. This massive migration, driven by his unpredictable vision, caused widespread suffering and death.

Daulatabad Fort, with its towering walls, intricate tunnels, and crocodile-filled moat, was designed to be impenetrable. Tughlaq’s ambition was to make it the heart of his empire, but the fortress became a symbol of his failure when he eventually ordered everyone back to Delhi. Though Daulatabad's defences were unmatched, Tughlaq’s vision proved unsustainable.

Today, the fort stands as a reminder of Tughlaq’s reign, offering visitors a glimpse into the legacy of a king whose madness shaped the course of Indian history.
