This Great Spotted Woodpecker makes use of a so called "anvil" to secure and open a pine cone. By wedging the cone into a crevice of the tree, the bird can easily hammer away at the cone to open it up and take out the seeds. One woodpecker can use many different anvils, depending on the dimensions of the pinecones they have gathered. Looking at the state of this branch, the missing bark and claw marks, it seems that this anvil has been well used. Pinecones mainly become a food source during wintertime when there are less insects to be found.
