47회. [영진스님-간화선5대선사대법회] 참선과 화두 그리고 중도

백담사의 무금선원 유나 영진스님을 시작으로 드디어 계묘년 10월 15일 간화선 5대 선사 대법회가 열렸다. 간화선 대법회를 맞이하여 영진스님은 불자들에게 참선과 화두 그리고 중도와 관련하여 법문을 전하여 주셨다.

부처님이 살아계시기 전부터 생사(生死)는 존재하였고 이것은 세상의 이치이다. 인연이라는 것도 인과 연이 함께 만나야 과라는 것이 생기는 것이다. 이를 하나라도 부정하게 되면 모든것을 부정하게 되는 것이다. 그리고 부정을하게 되면 중도를 가는 것이라고 볼 수 없다. 영진스님께서 불자들에게 궁극적으로 전달하고자 하시는 말씀은 무엇이었을까?

영진스님께서는 불자들에게 좋아하는 글귀를 소개하여주시면서 이를 하나씩 파헤쳐보는 시간을 가졌다. "태고화상어록 답방산거사"에 나오는 이 내용은 어떻게 우리가 이해해야하는 것일까?

"생각이 일어나고 사라지는 것을 생사라 한다. 이 생사에 부딪혀 힘을 다해 화두를 들라. 화두가 순일하게 들리면 일어나고 사라짐이 없어질 것이니 일어나고 사라짐이 없어진 것을 고요하고 한다. 고요함 가운데 화두가 없으면 무기(無記)라 하고, 고요한 가운데서도 화두가 살아있는 것을 신령한 지혜라고 한다. 이 텅 빈 고요화 신령한 지혜가 허물어지거나 뒤섞이게 하지 말 것이니 이 렇게 공부하면 멀지 않아 깨달을 것이다. 몸과 마음이 화두와 한 덩어리가 되면, 기대고 의지할 것이 없어지고 마음이 갈 곳도 없어질 것이다. "

■ Meditation, Hwadu, and the Middle Way ■

On October 15th of the Year of the Rabbit, the Hwadu Dharma Assembly of the Five Great Masters was finally held, starting with Zen Master Youngjin of Baekdamsa's Mugeum Seonwon. In this assembly, Zen Master Youngjin delivered a Dharma talk to Buddhists on the topics of meditation, Hwadu, and the Middle Way.

Before the Buddha's time, life and death existed, and this is the principle of the world. Conditions and causes must come together to create results. If you deny even one aspect of this, you deny everything. Denying this means you are not following the Middle Way. What, ultimately, is Zen Master Youngjin trying to convey to Buddhists?

Zen Master Youngjin introduced a favorite quote and spent time analyzing it with the audience. How should we understand this passage from the "Taego Hwasang Eorok: Reply to Bangsan Gosa"?

"To say that thoughts arise and disappear is life and death. Confront this life and death with all your effort and hold the Hwadu. When the Hwadu is held purely, the arising and disappearing will cease, and what remains is tranquility. If there is no Hwadu in tranquility, it is termed as ‘unrecorded’; if the Hwadu remains alive within tranquility, it is called 'sacred wisdom.’ Do not let this empty tranquility and sacred wisdom become distorted or mixed. Study in this way, and you will soon attain enlightenment. When body and mind become one with the Hwadu, there will be no more reliance or attachment, and the mind will have no place to go."
