In some rural areas of the Solomon Islands, 80% of people defecate in the open. Open defecation presents a serious community health problem, since uncontained shit can contaminate food and water and result in diarrhoea and skin and eye infections. Open defecation is also a protection issue, especially for women and girls, who face high risks of physical and sexual violence when defecating in the open.

The Ministry of Health and Medical Services, with support from UNICEF and other partners, is introducing Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) in the Solomon Islands. CLTS is a powerful participatory tool to stop open defecation and improve community health. The first trials began in 2012, and the first national training of trainers was led by Dr Kamal Kar, Chairman of the CLTS Foundation. This video gives an overview of the training, narrated by Dr Kar, and shows community action following CLTS "triggering" by the newly-trained facilitators.
