At the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign (UIUC), a student named Marc Andresseen started working on a web brower, Mosaic, after seeing an early text-only browser called ViolaWWW in late 1992. However, Mosaic would have graphics and multimedia support built-in. Gaining funding through the High-Performance Computing and Communications Initiative, a US-federal research and development program initiated by US Senator Al Gore. The first version of Mosaic was ported to UNIX in February 1993. While UNIX was more accessible than NeXTSTEP, it wasn't still that quote accessible to the masses. I doubt that many people had access to a DECstation running Ultrix and running DECWindows. However, work on a Windows release started, with the beta releases first seeing the light of day in August 1993.

The software was provided free of charge with no cost, with the Windows release needing at least a 386 with Windows 3.1 and Win32S installed. That releases took off rapdily with another platform begging for its own port. Mosaic v1.0.3 was released on January 27, 1994. Mac Users could now rejoice as this newfound web experience. Of course, the early Mosaic releases had their issues. Mosaic was heavy on system resources and crashed on a regular basis, regardless of whether you were using the Windows, UNIX, or Mac release.

Seeing massive commercial value, Marc Andresseen left UIUC, found some venture capitalist, and started his own company, Netscape Communications, and work started on the Netscape web browser. Having even more features, but yet, also much better performance and much more stable, Netscape quickly displaced Mosaic and would became the leading browser on multiple platforms. If you were on Windows 3.1 or 95, IBM's OS/2 Warp, or Mac System 7.5, those with Internet access were probably using Netscape, but that is another story for another day.

BasiliskII is emulating a MacIIci with a Motorola 68030 with a FPU, 8MB's of RAM, and with a screen resolution of 800 by 600, 24/32-bit color depth. System Software 7.1.1 is installed.
