What's Interesting Wednesday. The sedate gait of The Gulflander.

After viewing some of my recent historic rail motor footage TEAC* sent me some drone footage of the Gulflander. In the last video (    • QR RM93 - The Gulflander Crosses The Norma...   ) we saw the Gulflander crossing the Norman River. Here we see the Gulflander cruising along around East Haydon.

The Gulflander is probably Australia's oldest equipped weekly rail service still operated by a State Government rail authority. Yes, there are Government owned or sponsored museums that have older equipment, and they may operate every week during school holidays or certain times of the the year; but the 1950s rail motor and rail cars of the Gulflander operate all year round. Some of the track and sleepers are original and were laid in the 1890s! The rail motor RM93, that powers today's train, was built in the 1950s at the Ipswich Railway Workshops. The trailing cars are based on slightly more modern, but still built in the 1950s, 1800 series rail motors (but built by Clyde Engineering in Granville, NSW); TP1809 a Trailing Passenger car, and RM1811 which was converted to TP1811 by removing its motor in the 1980s so it could be used by the Gulflander. RM93 is powered by a 102 hp Gardner diesel engine.

The Gulflander ( https://gulflander.com.au ) departs Normanton Station every Wednesday for the 94 mile journey to Croydon, where it overnights. The train returns on the Thursday. The Normanton to Croydon Railway line is the only line in Qld still measured in miles. An ingenious steel sleeper system allows seasonal flood waters to flow over the line but reduce the possibility of flood damage.

What's Interesting Wednesday. I have a bunch of videos of stationary and traction steam engines, old rail motors, modern trains that happen to show up whilst waiting for steam trains, old tractors, and just 'stuff' that interests me and so might interest you. I've therefore decided that Wednesday will be the day reserved for interesting stuff that isn't steam trains.
