A patient in his mid-40s had lost sensation in his lower lip following a previous jaw surgery, impacting his ability to feel hot or cold and even affecting simple interactions. MRI and CT scans helped doctors locate the nerve damage, identifying areas of compression and extra bone growth. A nerve graft using a 13-14 cm nerve from the patient's leg was grafted onto both sides of the jaw. The damaged nerve branches were connected to the grafted nerve using microvascular stitches.

Nerve healing occurs at approximately 1mm per day, with an additional 30-day latency period. For an 8cm nerve, the expected recovery time is about 110 days (around four months). Doctors anticipate the patient regaining 60-80% of the sensation in his lower lip within this timeframe.
