A cataclysmic eruption at Mount St. Helens on Sunday morning 1980 has left the Pacific Northwest reeling, marking one of the most destructive volcanic events in United States history.

At 8:32 a.m., the once-tranquil peak erupted with staggering force, triggered by a magnitude 5.1 earthquake that caused the north face of the mountain to collapse in a massive landslide-the largest in recorded history. This collapse unleashed a violent lateral blast that flattened 230 square miles of forest, uprooting trees as far as 17 miles away.

The eruption sent an enormous plume of ash and gas towering over 15 miles into the atmosphere, turning day into night in parts of Washington, Idaho, and beyond. Ashfall blanketed cities and towns as far as 1,000 miles away, disrupting air travel and causing health concerns for residents.
