So how do you do it?

Well first you’re gonna need a lot of time and a lot of patience. To make an original tone-play takes a good ear, and a lot of messing around.

You gotta keenly listen to a song that has nice tones and cue point each tone that you think can sound like a melody. Then you gotta experiment with all those possibilities.

But once you get it down, you got an easy and fun transition to do to wow a crowd.

So let’s breakdown a tone-play.

now The two songs we’re going use are

Toms diner by Suzanne Vega and Semi Charmed Life by third eye blind.

Now we before start let me just say that there are a bunch of ways to tone play, this is just one method into doing it. Feel free to experiment and mess around.

All you really gotta do is just play with the current songs tones to make a melody.

So the first step is to find a song with a bunch of tones. So for this tutorial that’s Toms Diner,

the 2nd step is to mess around and cue point the tones of the song. So this is the most important part and the most tedious. Basically you experiment and cue point the tones of the song to find the right tones to make a melody of another song.

When you cue point a song, make sure that you place your cue points on different notes.

So for this tutorial, I placed my cue points on separate tones of toms diner, and I experimented. demo

The song you tone play into could be anything. The possibilities are just limited to your musical knowledge.

Eventually you’ll figure something out on your own

And I eventually figured out that the tones of Tom’s Diner can sound a lot like the melody of semi charmed life.

And now the next step is to find a way to mix these two songs in, to make a cohesive and clean transition.

So our Semi Charmed life song on the other deck is an extended version of it.

So the plan is to mix tom’s diner into the intro of semi charmed life, and at the same time perform the tone play right before the drop of the song. This is how I wanna do it. But you could do it differently.

The point is to play the current song, then to perform the tone play and play the next song.
