In this one, it’s a proper “day in the life” for the Cherry Picker Man — tight access chimney work in Nottinghamshire, a chimney liner install in Derby, plus some overdue spider lift maintenance back at base.

We start off in Carlton / Gedling (Notts) fitting two new chimney cowls, but the real challenge isn’t the job… it’s the access. I’ve got to squeeze the spider through a narrow alleyway between two houses, remove the basket, narrow the machine down, and make smart setup decisions (including avoiding outrigger loads over an attenuation tank beneath a patio).

Then it’s on to Derby to work alongside Fires & Fireplaces (Ashbourne Road) on a liner install — full outreach, tight clearances, overhead cables, and a quick smoke bomb test to confirm which pot the liner needs to go down (because guessing is fun… but being certain is better 😄).

We also get into some real talk about:
Why I’m not a fan of vermiculite backfilling around liners (and why it caused a bit of Facebook controversy)
The reality of being non-HETAS for this part of the job (I’m not signing anything off — I’m doing the access and drop)
What you actually see up there: dodgy flaunching, cracked stacks, wonky pots, and why falling debris is no joke

Finally, back at base, I tackle a problem that’s been bugging me: hydraulic hoses chafing on the boom track. I share advice I got from my On The Boom community, fit hose covers, and do a slightly “bodgey-but-practical” protective fix to help extend hose life (hydraulic oil everywhere is not on today’s to-do list).

And to finish — a quick review of a surprisingly decent bit of kit: the Letour lamp that actually lives up to the hype.
