Abstract Title: Lessons Learned: Type 1 Diabetes Data Collection During the Time of COVID-19

Abstract Authors: Katherine Chapman, BA, Allyson Hughes, PhD, Jeoffrey Bispham, MA, Carolina Leon, BS

Abstract: The T1D Exchange Research Team is part of a nonprofit that conducted research with the type 1 diabetes (T1D) community virtually prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite online research expertise, the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted both quantitative and qualitative research projects in unexpected ways. This presentation summarizes five research projects conducted in the last year, all of which have contained a quantitative aspect (survey data, CGM data, etc.) and/or a qualitative aspect (interviews or focus groups). Quantitatively, we have seen an increase in repeat respondents and fraudulent accounts. We have also witnessed an increase in the number of genuine respondents; people are more likely to fill out a survey in the comfort of their own home during the time of COVID-19 and within a faster timeframe. Qualitatively, there is increased interest in participating in interviews and focus groups; one recent focus group project seeking to recruit 24 participants received 404 eligible participant inquiries in less than two weeks of recruitment. However, we have also witnessed an increase in “no show” participants in a recent interview project, causing us to focus more on building rapport with participants and need additional time to complete data collection. The T1D Exchange Research Team has also noticed an increase of misinformation from participants, such as providing inaccurate or vague responses during focus groups and interviews. There have been many lessons learned about conducting research amidst a pandemic, and future research should examine how a stressful worldwide event can impact health research.
