Our chat today is going to be all about the updated version of what we all know and love as CTM - one that is needed no matter what your skin type may be.
Now CTM is the most basic of all skincare routines. It's also been around for so long that we think it's time to shake things up a bit to make sure that your routine is truly doing justice to your skin.
So here goes - our basic 5 (yes 5) step routine is:
Cleansing
Exfoliation
Toning
Moisturizing
and most importantly PROTECTION!
It doesn't matter what your skin type is, or how old you are, or what the climate is where you live - this 5 step skincare routine will ensure your skin is healthy, happy, and the best it can be.
Step 1: CLEANSING
Cleansers help to remove dirt and impurities.
Choose the right cleanser depending on your skin type.
If you have dry skin, avoid foaming cleansers as they will further aggravate the situation.
If you have oily skin avoid milk cleansers.
Read labels and choose the right cleanser - try and choose natural skin care brands as much as you can. Definitely stay away from parabens and synthetic colourants or fragrances.
Step 2: EXFOLIATION
Exfoliation helps to remove dead skin cells from the surface of the skin.
This is key for dry, oily, normal or combination skins.
Oily or combination skins should exfoliate 2-3 times a week, while dry or normal skin can exfoliate every week to 10 days.
Use a home made DIY exfoliator or look for a store bought one.
Step 3: TONER
Toning helps rebalance your skin after cleansing and prepares it to better absorb your serum or moisturiser.

Step 4: MOISTURIZING
Moisturizing your skin is super important.
And yes I'm speaking to all you oily skin girls out there who sometimes skip this step because you - mistakenly - think this is the equivalent of adding more oil to an already oily skin.
When you skip this step, your skin dries out and reacts to this situation by producing even more oil. it's a bit of a vicious cycle.
So look for light weight, gel based moisturisers that give your skin the moisture it needs without being too heavy or greasy.
Step 5: PROTECTION!
Protection is probably one of the most important things you can do for your skin.
If you skip this step, you might as well not bother with the previous four steps.
Make sure you always use sunscreen, and not just in the warmer days of summer.
Sunscreen is something you should wear every day, all year round.
Choose a sunscreen that is SPF 30 or more, apply generously to all parts of the body that will be exposed to the sun.
Remember to apply sunscreen 10-15 minutes before you head out of the door.
So there you go - the 5 basic skin care rules you MUST follow.
Choose the brand that works for you and your budget - just make sure they are appropriate for your skin type.
