The Little Prince was originally published in 1943. Its original works and images are now in the public domain in United States and most other countries.
Description:
It was written by Antoine de Saint-Exupery, a French military pilot and writer, first US published, then again in liberated France. Becoming one of history’s most popular with over 140 million sold worldwide, it is the second most translated book ever.
Originally self-illustrated in watercolours; the tale's pilot meets a strange prince from an asteroid, whilst he is stranded in the desert. Parts of it were inspired by a crash survived by Saint-Exupery in 1935. Described in his 1939 memoir, they landed in the Libyan Sahara, going without food and water for 4 days.
Befriending the boy royalty, he recounts visiting various planets, his journey through friendship, loneliness and loss to his wise criticism of the nature of adult world. His gentle observations of civilisation remind us humans, we’ve all had a childhood and have an inner child. With his pen and pad, the pilot addresses his own need for connection, realising the timeless truth that life is found in it's wonder not it’s woe.
And when life's mysteries are devastatingly confusing, we must become one with its ways, remembering time spent on something you love is valued, never wasted.
About the Author:
Much of Saint-Exupéry's work is inspired by his pilot experiences. Antoine's first story, The Aviator was published in the literary magazine The Silver Ship in 1926. Then in 1929 came his first book, Southern Mail, which was released simultaneously to his dual career as journalist and aviator taking off. The 1931 publication of Night Flight popularised his work to the world by winning the Prix Fermina. That same year, Antoine married Consuelo Suncin, a writer and artist from El Salvador.
On 30 December 1935, while competing in the air race Raid, Antoine and his co-pilot crashed near the Nile Delta, in Wadi Natrun Valley. Surviving the crash itself, they landed with limited water and had vivid hallucinations throughout. On the 4th day, a Bedouin found them, giving a native rehydration treatment. He later described in Wind, Sand and Stars, that their lives were spared with the gift of water.
Apart of the French Air Force at the war's start, but because of the Vichy Regime he was accused of being a German supporter and was exiled to America during the Armistice of 1940. Now an ex-patriate and distraught over the world, he became depressed and a drinker and created The Little Prince. It is thought the fable was influenced by his own childhood, his search for peace and humanity and his love for his wife Consuelo, all clear themes noted upon reading.
Saint-Exupéry continued to write until 1943, when he headed to North Africa. On his last mission he was following German troops and on July 31st 1944 he flew unarmed from Corsica and was never seen again.
In 1998, his identity bracelet was found by a fisherman. By 2003, his plane fragments and landing gear were placed in an exhibit dedicated to him in Paris’ Air and Space Museum.
Rarely have an author and character been so intimately bound together as Antoine de Saint-Exupéry and his Little Prince, and forever has it touched its readers.
