I used Real-ESRGAN AI technology to upscale all nearly 22,000 files for graphics in the Steam version. Everything is included: character textures, aeons, bosses, regular enemies, maps/world/Spira/Zanarkand, weapons, animations, interface, menus, icons, fonts, pre-rendered backgrounds, save sphere and auto-save thumbnails, PC-exclusive visuals such as boosters and keyboard keys, help/tutorial visuals such as screenshots, and a long etcetera. The remaster comes with transparent menu icons for characters, but aeons had square icons with an ugly solid white background. By using any of the mod versions, the background for aeons icons is removed. Other than this and title screens, nothing was changed, only enhanced with higher resolution.
The HD remaster is now 10 years old, so I decided to ReRemaster it. Surprisingly, no one has uploaded a mod like mine yet, despite the popularity of the game since the PS2 era, and the exponential enhancement of AI technologies during these last two years. My modest gaming PC was working for over 100 hours only to do the upscaling part (using both CPU and GPU). In addition to this, I have invested so many hours on the whole process, such as "manually" dumping files, converting between file formats, testing and fixing issues (figuring things out), recording videos and taking screenshots for graphics comparison, adding "quality of life" content, compressing the various mod files, uploading everything to the internet... You can tell I really DO LOVE this game, much like many of you do! Now, it's about time someone makes a mod to unlock frame rate. 30 is just ridiculous... Specially when we're talking of a 10-year-old remaster originally released on PS3 that lists "a GPU with 512 MB" as one of its main requisites.
Not everyone has the same hardware, so this mod comes in 4 versions: small, medium, extreme and overkill. Each version requires higher storage read speeds, a better GPU and more free space on your drive. The more requirements, the better the graphics enhancement is. I conveniently recorded many videos and took many screenshots for you to directly compare each version before downloading anything, just in case you have a slow internet connection or are skeptical about the quality of the work. The overkill version does NOT require a RTX-tier GPU, but it DOES require M.2 storage with enough capacity, and using NTFS compression is highly recommended for ALL versions. If you ignore this warning, the overkill version will result in frequent and slow "loading" screens and sometimes stutter or sudden frame rate drops. You should be fine with any CPU with at least 4 cores and 4 GB DDR4 RAM or better. Going below this, you probably already have game performance problems without any mods, as your hardware is too dated.
FMVs (video files AKA prerendered cutscenes) are not included, as it's out of the scope of this mod. FFX2-exclusive visuals are not included for the time being, but X-2 will still benefit from this mod for shared graphics (mainly maps/world related).
