Effective physician-patient communication after an adverse outcome can help mitigate the likelihood of a medical malpractice claim, says Timothy B. McDonald, MD, JD, Chief Safety and Risk Officer for Health Affairs at the University of Illinois.

Dr. McDonald describes a case in which a patient with cancer received a second, inadvertent dose of chemotherapy, which severely damaged her mucous membranes. The doctor sought advice in communicating the mistake to the patient. In the end, the patient thanked the physician for the frank and empathetic way in which he told her about the error. And four years later, the patient is a cancer survivor.
