CHAPTER TWO: P.S. I Love You

In Chapter Two the reader--in this case listeners--learn more about the main character, Mariah Johnson. We learn more about Mariah's sibling, Kim, and her parents' separation of marriage. Mariah is a bookish type teenager and she intends to write a romance novel over the summer before her junior year in high school.

Upsetting family news is delivered in chapter two and Mariah's plans seemingly turn on a dime. Mariah learns that she will have to relocate for the summer in Palm Springs while her mother takes a seasonal position house sitting for the Abbott family.

General Information:

Sweet Dreams books were teen and preteen romance novels (before the term 'young adult') and as defined by the inside book cover, "for age 11 and up." My opinion is that the content is PG-rated, meaning nothing more than an innocent kiss typically occurred in the narrative of the books' story lines.

Most of the story lines revolved around a 15- or 16-year old female character, her family life, and a crush or love interest. Likely scenarios centered around typical themes of living as a teenager living in the United States during the 1980s: learning to drive, school activities, social and family life.

The book, P.S. I Love You by Barbara Conklin, and published by Bantam Books in 1981 is narrated by fangirl, Cherise Janell, aka, "CJ".

The playlist for the Sweet Dreams books begins with a reading of Chapter 1 of the book #1: P.S. I Love You by Barbara Conklin. The title has a double meaning, which is fun and this particular book is linked to a second book, which I will not tell you the title as it might be a spoiler alert to this one.

I read what I hope will be the first of many Sweet Dreams books as I relive a very lovely time in my life growing up in the 1980s. Please note that this genre of books is widely reflective of a small American demographic, which is white, suburban, and nuclear family detailed.

The stable of Sweet Dreams titles were written by different contributing authors. Among my favorites is Barbara Conklin, which is the author I'm reading in this recording. This book has 28 chapters, so there will be multiple readings in the playlist for this particular book.

This book contains commentary and narrative about the emotional issues of life and loss. If you are mourning the loss of a loved one, this book may trigger negative emotional feelings.

Books, such as P.S. I Love You often grappled with emotional themes as a way of speaking to Generation X viewers/readers. We can see this approach through sitcoms and after-school specials that were popular during the 1980s. A lot has changed on this approach as our comfort levels about how we discuss certain topics differ somewhat today.

My hope is that by reading these books I am able to transport you to a time and place that existed for you. If you were a teen in the 80s, and these books do not at all reflect your experience, maybe it can be a pleasant escape as nothing more than a fictional tale.
