The Great SUPER-SESSION RIP-OFF Chase... {extracted from the inner sleeve of the LP}
In 1969.........Well, before getting into what this very recording in 1969, was all about, I should point out the following...
A few years back, a 'lost' interview from 1971 surfaced out of the blue... It was a conversation between Master Dylan and his friend Tony Glover, a Blues/Harmonica player himself... During the interview, Master Dylan reveals that he had written "Lay Lady Lay" for Lady Streisand... Not necessarily as a Tribute, rather as a composition for her to perform & record... which of course was not to be...
Back to 1969... The Record Plant, NYC... An INSANELY WILD Project was being produced by Earl Doud... It was to be named FREE CREEK... a super-group comprised of many Masters for the sole purpose of jamming together... Doud somehow managed to bring together an UNCANNY list of Superstars for the sessions... the likes of Master Emerson, Master Wood, Master Beck, Master Mitchell, Master Clapton, Lady Ronstadt, Master Soloff, Master Bramlett, Master Rebbenek, aka. "Dr. John" (who was to include Master Wood in his touring band, later that year)... to name a few...
The sessions were taking place in the summer of 1969, during the HEYDAY of a band called BLIND FAITH... At the time, Master Wood landed in NYC by himself, looking for inspiration, ended up checking out The Record Plant where this crazy super-session was about to take off... Doud who used to make comedic albums, originally envisioned Master Rundgren as the 'Musical Director' for his super-session... After the departure of Master Rundgren (due to financial issues), the role of 'Musical Director' for the project, fell on to a young 19 year old, Master Klingman who was of course the Keyboard player for Master Rundgren's UTOPIA...
During production, there were many sessions throughout the summer at different times, yet only 2 of those sessions, are of particular interest for our purposes... I must also point out that at the time, Master Wood was perhaps going through some personal issues... The disbanding of TRAFFIC as well as WOODEN FROG did not help matters either...
♣ Session 1: As Master Klingman elaborated in a recent interview from 2001, Master Emerson, Master Wood, Master Mitchell and Master Feiton started to jam on Master Harris' "Freedom Jazz Dance" which is incredible because Master Wood was heavily influenced by Master Harris and was a HUGE fan...However, as Master Klingman recalls, Master Wood struggled during the jam, his playing and soloing were erratic, consequently, his parts had to be left out of the recording...
♠ Session 2: The next session was an improvement... Master Klingman leading the troops on the keyboards, with Master Wood on the Flute, ran through a fantastic version of Master Dylan's "Lay Lady Lay"... The jam was to include Master Beck who 'on the day' turned out to be a NO SHOW, so they ended up having Master Klingman's friend Doug Rodriguez on the Guitar... However, Master Wood's struggles carried on especially during the Flute Solo, as a consequence Master Farrell of RETURN TO FOREVER was brought in, to overdub the Flute solo... On the recording, most of the melody is laid down by Master Wood with Master Farrell executing the Flute solo towards the end...
All in all, there is so much more to read and say about this super-session. It was clear however, Master Wood was not in the right state of mind at the time, perhaps going through some anxiety for various reasons... Having said that, I am absolutely certain that he really wanted to contribute more to these sessions...
At the end of the day, it was revealed that NONE of the musicians/technicians who were involved with FREE CREEK got paid and the album saw the light of day 4 years later, in 1973...
But there are many other interpretations...
Enjoy Loud...
