We visited Spiti from Shimla side and we stayed at Rakcham for 2 days and then move forward to explore Spiti. Today is our fifth day from spiti trip in which we did Kaza Local Sightseeig & we covered various places like : key monastery , Chicham Bridge , Kibber Village , Hikkim & Langza

About Key Monastery :
Key Monastery (Key Gompa) is a Tibetan Buddhist monastery of the Gelugpa sect located on top of a hill at an altitude of 4,166 metres (13,668 ft) above sea level, close to the Spiti River, in the Spiti Valley of Himachal Pradesh, Lahaul and Spiti district, India.

Key monastery has a collection of ancient murals and books, including Buddha images.
There are three floors, the first one is mainly underground and used for storage. One room, called the Tangyur is richly painted with murals. The ground floor has the beautifully decorated Assembly Hall and cells for many monks.

Founded by Dromton, a famous disciple of teacher Atisha in the 11th century, the monastery used to house about 350 lamas at one time. The number of inmates at the monastery has come down

The biggest centre of Buddhist learning in Spiti Valley, Key Monastery is over 1000-year-old. It is the oldest training centre for Lamas.Key Gompa now belongs to the Gelugpa sect, along with Tabo Monastery and Dhankar Gompa, one of three in Spiti.

The scenic landscape which forms the backdrop for Key Monastery is also a factor in the large number of tourists making a beeline for the remote monastery. Surrounded by snow capped mountains and glaciers, the beauty of the valley is breathtaking. The route to Key Monastery is also beautiful.

The culture of Key, like the rest of Spiti, closely resembles that of Tibet. It is hardly surprising then that the whole of Spiti is known as Little Tibet.

Some of the scenes of Bollywood movie Paap, starring John Abraham and Udita Goswami, were shot at Key Monastery.

There are a few accommodation options at the monastery. Tourists who visit the monastery, prefer to stay at Kaza , offers a wide range in terms of hotels, resorts and home stays.
There are no restaurants or eateries at the Key Monastery. It is advisable to carry food while visiting the monastery. The monks at the monastery serve tea to all visitors.

Q&A SECTION

How do you get to Key Monastery?

The Key Monastery is located 14 km from Kaza which is the nearest bus station to the monastery. In order to reach the Key Monastery, you will have to reach Kaza whether you are coming from Manali or Shimla. Several buses are plying from both Manali and Shimla to Kaza which usually takes around 10 to 12 hours to reach Kaza.

Then from there, you will have to hire private cabs to reach the monastery which takes about 40 minutes. The climb to the monastery is quite steep and challenging.

What is key monastery famous for?

The monastery is known for its ancient murals, rare thangkas and ancient weapons. The images of Gautam Buddha in dhyana (meditation) position are a must see. The monastery also has a sizeable collection of musical instruments like trumpets, cymbals and drums.

Can we stay in Key monastery?

There is a Key Village that comes just before the Key monastery while coming from Kaza. It also has a monastery guest house as well where you can stay for the day or you can stay inside the monastery rooms as well by paying a small fees to the monastery.
