How to Perform the Zuma Maneuver to Treat Lateral Canal BPPV

Описание к видео How to Perform the Zuma Maneuver to Treat Lateral Canal BPPV

In this video we review how to perform the Zuma Maneuver. As the video demonstrates, the maneuver is simple to perform and can be used to treat both canalithiasis and cupulolithiasis of the lateral canal.

In the original article in 2016, there is no mention of using a pillow, but in this video we take the liberty of having a pillow under the patient's head. We find this useful to keep the head in a neutral position in side lying and keeps the head slightly inclined when supine.

While the original technique can be used to treat both canalithiasis and cupulolithiasis of the lateral canal, a modified version has been outlined to treat canalithiasis affecting the posterior arm of the lateral canal (most common form of lateral canal BPPV and characterized by positionally evoked unsustained geotropic nystagmus). Modifications include:
- turning the head 45 degrees away from the affected side while the patient is sitting, then keeping this head position while the patient initially lays on their affected side,
- not having to make the position changes suddenly,
- and not having to hold each position for 3 minutes.
