On the occasion of Bruce Nauman’s White Cube Hong Kong exhibition ‘Presence/Absence’ (2021), White Cube Director Irene Bradbury met with curators Joan Simon and Andrea Lissoni to discuss the work of the influential contemporary artist.

From their bases in London, Los Angeles and Munich respectively, this wide-ranging conversation covers Bruce Nauman’s 2020 Tate Modern exhibition, which emphasised his work in sound and moving image alongside his sculptural practice. They also discuss ‘Bruce Nauman: Presence/Absence’, White Cube’s first exhibition of his work in Hong Kong, which foregrounds the artist’s experimental approach both in front of and behind the camera.

Joan Simon is an independent curator and writer based in LA. Formerly Managing Editor at 'Art in America' and Curator-at-Large at the Whitney Museum of Art, she has written extensively on Bruce Nauman, including the 1987 interview ‘Breaking the Silence’ and a catalogue raisonné for the Walker Art Center in 1994. Recently she has contributed to Bruce Nauman publications for Tate Modern (2020) and White Cube (2021).

Andrea Lissoni is the Director of the Haus der Kunst in Munich. As Senior Curator of International Art at Tate Modern, he co-curated Bruce Nauman’s 2020 exhibition with Nicholas Serota in partnership with the Stedelijk Museum.
