A Loveland, Colorado, police officer has been FIRED and faces criminal charges after striking a handcuffed woman in the face at a hospital. The incident, which occurred on May 20, involved Officer Russell Maranto and a woman taken into protective custody.

According to the Loveland Police Department, the woman was handcuffed to a hospital bed when she spat at Officer Maranto. Maranto responded by striking the woman in the face, causing minor injuries to her mouth and face. Other officers present immediately intervened to separate Maranto from the woman.

Following an internal investigation and review of body-worn camera footage, Chief Tim Doran terminated Maranto for policy violations regarding the use of force. Maranto has also been criminally charged with third-degree assault, a Class 1 misdemeanor. The woman involved was also charged with third-degree assault on a peace officer.
