Rescuing a bat hit by car - this is Rocky [rescue with Megabattie]

Описание к видео Rescuing a bat hit by car - this is Rocky [rescue with Megabattie]

I had Megabattie visiting when I got a midnight call for a bat found dragging himself across a road. He had disappeared when I arrived so after spending an hour searching trees and bushes with a torch I decided to try again early in the morning, this time with Megabattie along for the ride.

It didn't take too long to find him in the daylight and Meg soon skillfully retrieved him in my net. As we expected he had a nasty fracture of his humerus (upper arm/wing bone) right next to the elbow and unfortunately that's something that can't be fixed.

Rocky was a beautiful young boy, only about 16 weeks old and just discovering the world for himself. There were flowering bottlebrush all along the road where the bats were feeding when he got hit by a car. He had managed to climb up into one of the trees, so at least he had lots of delicious nectar available during the night.

We gave him painkillers, juice, and grapes while we waited for the vet to open so he could be put to sleep.

RIP Rocky.

It was a sad outcome but it was awesome having Meg there to help. We're usually doing these things alone so it's great to have support, especially from a rescuer of Meg's calibre.
