Adenoids are a patch of tissue that is high up in the throat, just behind the nose, they are found in kids of age 8-10 years. Adenoids help us prevent infection caused by outside bacteria or dust particles.

When adenoids increase from their natural size it starts causing the problem. Enlarged adenoids are adenoids that are swollen. It is a common problem in children. The symptoms of increased adenoids are - snoring, mouth breathing, persistent congestion, nasal drainage, ear problems, sinusitis, and “nasal” voice quality.

Adenoids trap bacteria and viruses from our air and help protect our bodies. They can cause problems for the child when they become grossly enlarged, blocking the back of the nose. Which can lead to a deviated nasal septum in the future that is why it is important to treat them on time.

There are a few myths associated with adenoids, such that if they are removed then it may reduce immunity and these are the only tonsils one has. This is wrong because there are many times of tonsils in our bodies -
the pharyngeal tonsil, two tubal tonsils, two palatine tonsils, and the lingual tonsils. The causes of enlarged tonsils are -
Recurring infections in the throat, neck, or head; infections of the tonsils; contact with airborne viruses, germs, and bacteria. There are genetic causes of adenoids too.
There are two ways in which adenoids can be treated either medically or surgically. If there are mild symptoms like nasal snoring once in a while then it can be treated medically. If the patient has long and persisting symptoms even after taking medicines then surgery will be required.
The surgery for enlarged adenoids is known as #adenoidectomy. There are two types of adenoidectomy.
