Mental health diagnosis leaves individuals feeling helpless and defective, rather than aiding them in understanding the causes of their condition. In this interview, clinical psychologist Lucy Johnstone discusses how ‘formulation’, as opposed to diagnosis, gives individuals a collaborative role in making sense the nature of their mental state, focused on their experiences and the causes of their trauma. Such an approach, she explains, shifts the focus from ‘what’s wrong with me’ to ‘what’s happened to me’.
