Bondi residents were abruptly woken to a large gas main fire at around 2.00am

The quiet street succumbed to a fireball gushing from an electrical pit in Ramsgate Ave.

Multiple 000 calls were received by neighbours fearing the fire would engulf their street.

Bondi fire station was the first response, quickly controlling the situation and protecting a nearby tree and vehicle.

The gas fire continued to burn for over 6 hours as specialist workers dug up the road with jackhammers.

One resident was assisted by fire crews so his car could be saved from the radiant heat and flames.

One elderly resident had reported the smell of gas for a number of months.
