The year that Chief Spokane Garry was born, 1811, the Canadian explorer, surveyor, and trader of the Northwest Company, David Thompson, came from Canada through the Spokane area. He met the chief of the Middle Spokane Tribe, Eliium Spokanee, and established the trading post, Spokane House, just north of the present city of Spokane. He carried with him the book that had been part of a prophecy known among the Spokanes for decades. That brief encounter help pave the way for the Christian message to reach the Native tribes of the region. David Thompson was a deeply committed Christian, whose faith was well known to all who met him. His remarkable career left a lasting impression on the vast area known as the Pacific Northwest, which is the main topic of this presentation.
