French is a Romance language that evolved from the Vulgar Latin spoken in the Roman Empire, specifically from Gallo-Romance in Northern Gaul. It is closely related to other langues d'oïl spoken in northern France and southern Belgium. French has become an official language in 27 countries and is widely spoken across about 50 countries and territories.

Niçard, a dialect of Occitan traditionally spoken in Nice, France, is now rarely used as a vernacular language. Although most locals no longer speak it, there is a revival effort underway, with Niçard appearing in local media, on street signs, and being taught in schools. Some groups offer free lessons, and many students choose to study it. Despite its decline, interest in preserving and reviving Niçard continues to grow.
