🌿 EXPLORE THE ENCHANTING TRAILS OF THE FALLING FOSS WATERFALL WALK AND THE HAMLET OF LITTLEBECK
🌄 This circular route on my website offers a gentle, scenic introduction to the North York Moors. Beginning at May Beck Car Park, signposted from the B1416, a clear, well-kept path follows May Beck through tranquil woodland towards the 67-foot Falling Foss waterfall. The route takes you past the arched stone bridge and Midge Hall, continues past The Hermitage, a late-18th-century stone cave, then meanders through Little Beck Wood Nature Reserve to the hamlet of Littlebeck. From here, it crosses fields along the edge of Great Wood towards Leas Head Farm and Foss Farm, before returning via the stone bridge near Midge Hall to finish back at May Beck.
🧭 The walk covers 4½ miles and takes around 2½ hours to complete, with about 264 metres of ascent. Full directions, detailed route statistics, and parking advice are included on the walk page. You will also find links to Ordnance Survey and Outdooractive maps, offering features such as printing the route, downloading it to your device, and exporting it as a GPX file.
🏞️ Falling Foss lies in the north-east section of the North York Moors National Park on Little Beck, roughly 5 miles from Whitby. Access is straightforward, with Forestry Commission car parks and a scenic footpath from May Beck leading to the falls. Nearby Littlebeck is a charming hamlet on a tributary of the River Esk, and the sheltered valley between it and the waterfall is home to Little Beck Wood Nature Reserve, a lovely woodland rich in wildlife and seasonal flowers.
📸 Highlights include the compacted, comfortable path from May Beck through tranquil woodland, moss-draped boulders, boardwalks over boggy ground, and the photogenic stone bridge near Midge Hall. The showpiece is Falling Foss itself, a dramatic drop into a calm pool. You also pass The Hermitage with its ‘GC 1790’ inscription, follow sections of the Coast to Coast Path marked with ‘AW’ and acorn symbols, and enjoy varied scenery through Little Beck Wood, from stone steps and carved features to glimpses of dark Jurassic shale and small cascades, before gentle lanes and bridleways guide you back via Leas Head Farm and Foss Farm.
