Kylian Mbappe has agreed to relinquish a £69 million loyalty bonus to facilitate a smoother departure from Paris Saint-Germain this summer, while Liverpool gears up for their move. The 25-year-old is now in the final six months of his lucrative PSG contract, secured in 2022 after Parc des Princes officials successfully rebuffed significant interest from Real Madrid. However, at the outset of this season, Mbappe's relationship with PSG soured, resulting in his exclusion from the pre-season tour of Asia, as he informed the club of his decision not to extend for an additional year, contrary to PSG's expectations.
Despite the discord, Mbappe received an 80 million euro loyalty bonus for staying with the club beyond the summer transfer window, reintegrating into the squad under new manager Luis Enrique. Mbappe, however, waived the initial installment of the bonus and is prepared to forgo the entire amount if he departs Paris this summer.
In the midst of intricate financial developments, as reported by Caught Offside, the French captain can now enter into a pre-contract agreement with a new club, and Liverpool aims to capitalize on his uncertain future. While Real Madrid was initially considered the most interested party, numerous reports during the winter now indicate that Jurgen Klopp's Reds are leading the race, having engaged in prior discussions regarding a potential transfer.
"I had a conversation with Liverpool because it's my mom's favorite club," Mbappe shared with the Telegraph in 2022. "I don't know why; you'll have to ask her! It's a reputable club, and we crossed paths five years ago. During my time in Monaco, I had the chance to meet them. It's a prestigious club."
However, he hasn't completely ruled out the possibility of staying in the French capital. After PSG's 2-0 victory over Toulouse in the French Super Cup on Wednesday, the former Monaco starlet expressed, "I am highly motivated for this year; it's crucial. As I mentioned, we have titles to pursue, and we've already secured one, so that's accomplished. Beyond that, I haven't made a final decision yet. Nevertheless, given the agreement made with the chairman this summer, my decision may not be the determining factor."
