Q23. How can I travel to Umling La Pass - World's Highest Road? [Visit Umling La Pass Route Retails]

Umling La Pass in Ladakh is the highest motorable pass or road in the world at an altitude of 19300 feet. A lot of people ask me if they can travel to Umling La pass, how can they get permits to visit it, where is it located?

In order to visit Umling La pass, you need to first reach Hanle. From Hanle, you can make a day visit to Umling La pass using routes via Photila Pass or Ukdungle route. You can also travel from Loma - Dungti - Fukche - Koyul - Demochok route as well.

Umling La pass lies in the sensitive region of Ladakh with proximity to LAC on the Indo-China border.

Since 2018 you are NOT allowed to visit Umling La pass and in early days when the road was being constructed some handful of people did it with Hanle permits. But, it is no longer allowed. It was stopped as some bikers went far ahead and created a ruckus. That incident and its proximity with the Indo-China border forced the army to issue orders for stopping people from taking these routes near to border sensitive zones.
