India made 4G over a decade after it was actually developed overseas? Is India reinventing the wheel? To answer the first, 4G lays the ground for transition to 5G, since many of the devices for the former are compatible with the latter. Also, India needed to develop 4G on its own to ensure an indigenous technology that is completely secure and foolproof.

That's the word from Prof. Bhaskar Ramamurthi, Director of IIT Madras, on The Gist. As for indigenous 4G being tested on the state owned BSNL network, he points out that telecom is a strategic sector where the Indian government intends to have a presence. BSNL, in that sense, is the government's strategic instrument.

Prof. Ramamurthi said the indigenous 4G technology is of international standards and will be rolled out once trials are completed. The country is also preparing to roll out 5G, with Reliance Jio pushing its own variant.
