The Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, has been officially recognised by the Ministry of Mines as one of the Centres of Excellence (CoE) under the National Critical Minerals Mission (NCMM), a high-impact initiative with a budget of ₹16,300 crore aimed at bolstering India’s self-reliance in critical minerals for clean energy, defence, and advanced technology sectors.

The newly formed CoE at IISc will establish an Integrated Critical Minerals Research & Development Facility, spanning the entire value chain—from exploration and extraction to processing and recycling. It plans to design modular pilot-scale plants leveraging indigenous process technologies, thereby reducing dependence on imports.
