Xiaomi Mi 5X camera samples show off the dual-camera setup’s capabilities
The Xiaomi Mi 5X is out with the latest MIUI 9 OS and dual-camera.

At the Beijing event today, Xiaomi announced Mi 5X smartphone alongside MIUI 9 and Mi AI Speaker. Priced at RMB 1,499 (approximately Rs 15,000), the Mi 5X is also touted as a scaled-down variant of the company’s flagship Mi 6 smartphone. But both smartphones share similar camera configuration, and to show off its capabilities, Xiaomi has released a few camera samples.

Xiaomi has equipped the Mi 5X with a dual-camera setup on the rear featuring the same sensors as the Mi 6. So, the dual rear camera on Mi 5X comprises of a 12-megapixel wide-angle lens and a 12-megapixel telephoto lens to capture the depth-of-field details in the image. The primary camera has also been paired with a dual-LED flash to maintain the color tone of the images, and keep it as natural as it can. The dual-LED flash is placed on the extreme left side of the camera ring, making it appear slightly different from the Apple iPhone 7 Plus, but not completely.

In first impressions, the images do look vivid and aptly deliver the depth-of-field effect in portrait shots. The color balance appears to be neutral, and no such burst of colors is noticed in the photos. ALSO READ: MIUI 9 announced with refined UI, split-screen mode and smart assistant

We couldn’t help but notice the watermark on the photos, which look very similar to what is on offer on the OnePlus 5 and the Honor 8 Pro.

Xiaomi Mi 5X brings the flagship Mi 6's dual rear cameras to the masses

One of the headlining features of Xiaomi's 2017 flagship phone, the Mi 6, is its dual rear camera system. On Wednesday, Xiaomi launched a more affordable or mini version of the Mi 6 - in China - aka the Mi 5X that brings the former's dual rear cameras to the masses. The Mi 5X, just like the Mi 6, (also) comes with a dual camera setup on the rear -- 12-megapixel + 12-megapixel -- where one lens is wide-angle while the other is telephoto.

Although Xiaomi didn't mention the sensors on-board, it did say that the dual camera setup on the rear of the Mi 5X is the same as used in the Mi 6 leading us to believe that it is more or less the same deal. The Mi 6 dual cameras offer 2X optic zoom and 10X digital zoom (just like the iPhone 7 Plus) and therefore technically result in clearer distant shots and professional bokeh effects in portraits. The Mi 5X should be more or less on similar lines, although, it is yet to be seen whether or not the dual camera system on-board the Mi 5X is assisted with 4-axis OIS like the Mi 6.

Erstwhile, the Xiaomi Mi 5X comes with a full metal unibody design -- a stark departure from the Mi 5 and Mi 6's glass and metal bodies -- and a rear mounted fingerprint scanner. The phone, with its all metal body and dual rear cameras looks remarkably like the iPhone 7 Plus from every nook and corner. Everything from the 2.5 D curved glass on the front to the antenna lines placement on the back, screams the iPhone. The only visible difference is seen in the fingerprint scanner placement. As opposed to the iPhone 7 Plus that comes with a front-mounted fingerprint scanner, the Xiaomi Mi 5X sports one on the back. It comes with physical capacitive -- soft keys -- keys on the front and will be available in three colours: black, gold and rose gold (pink).
On the hardware side, the Mi 5X comes with a 5.5-inch 1080p display and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor clubbed with 4 gigs of RAM under the hood. It comes with 64GB of internal storage and USB Type-C for charging and data syncing. It is further backed by a 3,080mAh battery.

Alongside the Mi 5X, Xiaomi also announced MIUI 9, the next major iteration of Xiaomi's mobile operating system and is based on Android Nougat. Xiaomi is claiming to offer explosively fast app launch times with new MIUI 9 update and it will be available in beta starting from August 11.

The Mi 5X is exclusive to China for now and will cost RMB 1,499 which roughly translates to Rs 14,285.75. The Mi 6, on the other hand, starts at RMB 2,499 (roughly Rs 23,463) for the 6GB RAM/64GB memory version, and goes all the way to RMB 2,999 (roughly Rs 28,152) for the limited ceramic edition.
