Background

Mechanical heart valves are preferred in a younger population at the mitral position, if the native valves cannot be repaired, because of their durability. Meticulous maintenance of the international normalized ratio (INR) in the range of 2.5 to 3.5 is of paramount importance to maintain the valve function and prevent thromboembolic complications Despite education about the maintenance of mechanical valves and life-style modifications in dedicated valve clinics, a significant number of patients still present with stuck leaflets, The only treatment option available in such a scenario is to edo surgical replacement of the valve. 


Off-label thrombolysis has been shown to be successful in some patients, The efficacy, incidence of stroke, and long term outcome of the thrombolysis are not known, We report the safety and feasibility of percutaneous, transseptal transcatheter release of the stuck valve at the mitral position with cerebral embolic protection.
