I was honoured to speak in Parliament during the Second Reading debate on the Hillsborough Law – the Public Office (Accountability) Bill - on Monday 3rd November 2025.

This Bill is about one powerful idea: truth and justice. From Hillsborough to Orgreave, to the Shrewsbury 24, to Grenfell – we know that too often, working-class communities have had to fight tooth and nail against institutions that were meant to protect them, only to face delay, denial and deceit.

For decades, the Hillsborough families have shown the nation what dignity and courage look like in the pursuit of truth. Their fight is why we are even here today. And it’s thanks to the tireless work of campaigners, survivors, MPs and our city leaders that this Bill has finally made it this far.
But the job isn’t done. We cannot allow this Bill to be watered down, and we must ensure it delivers what the Hillsborough families and communities across the UK have long demanded:

⚖️ A statutory duty of candour on all public officials.
⚖️ Parity of legal funding for bereaved families.
⚖️ Real accountability for those who lie, mislead or obstruct justice.

Because truth should never be optional, and justice should never depend on your postcode or your pay packet. Liverpool has waited too long for the truth to be recognised and for justice to be done.

Now it’s time for this country to show that it has learned the lessons – and to deliver a Hillsborough Law worthy of its name.
