In this video, we’re breaking down real game film from GHSA preseason scrimmages and using it as a teaching tool for our umpires.

As part of my responsibility as Training Director, one of the most important jobs I have is reviewing film and providing clear, actionable feedback. Not just what happened, but what to do differently next time. Actionable is the key word here.

There is no better learning tool than watching plays back on film. It allows us to slow the game down, remove emotion, and evaluate positioning, timing, communication, and decision-making in a way that simply isn’t possible in real time.

The reality is this: with more than 140 umpires in our association alone, and many more at the state level, I can’t realistically watch every individual umpire every week. But by sharing these breakdowns with the entire group, my hope is that everyone can picture themselves in these situations, recognize familiar challenges, and think through how they might handle them differently.

This is how we grow, not just as individuals, but as an association.
