A Michigan State Police trooper was arrested Tuesday for perjury and obstruction of justice, according to the Leelanau County Prosecuting Attorney's office.

State police confirmed Trooper Charles Sierzputowski works out of the Cadillac post.

Sierzputowski was placed on unpaid leave starting August 22.

The Leelanau County Prosecuting Attorney's office confirmed Sierzputowski's charges are related to his accused perjury during a Grand Traverse County jury trial involving his wife.

Abigail Sierzputowski was found guilty by a jury in March for driving drunk and causing a serious injury crash in 2023.

During Abigail's sentencing, Grand Traverse County Chief Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Kyle Attwood said Trooper Sierzputowski abused his position and lied during the trial.

Attwood said in court, "He (Trooper Sierzputowski) had told the deputy that the defendant hadn't been drinking prior to driving and he said, 'I didn't say that, it's not on the body camera footage.' So, he had watched all of that body camera footage before coming into my office and coming up with this story. This is a situation where a state trooper was willing to get up on that stand and commit perjury for his wife. Wearing a state police pin, mind you, I assume in an effort to lend more credibility to what he was saying."

Hon. Judge Charles Hamlyn, who presided over the case, affirmed Attwood's statements in court that day.

"Just so there is no doubt, the court absolutely believes that's perjured testimony, just so everybody is clear on that," said Hamlyn.

The case against Trooper Sierzputowski was sent to the Attorney General's office to be reassigned to a different county due to conflict of interest.

It was officially placed with the Leelanau County Prosecuting Attorney's office in January.
