“Genesis” is a short animated movie about taming loneliness. Genesis is a Latin word which originated from the Greek language, and it means “rebirth”. My loneliness-oriented creative process was inspired by the Dutch postimpressionist painter Vincent Van Gogh’s painting “Starry Night”. It is said that the painter drew eleven starts because he based the painting on the biblical story of Joseph (Genesis 37:9). No matter what Joseph did, he could not receive recognition from his eleven brothers – the same can be said about Van Gogh not being recognized and accepted by art critics of his time.
In the animation, the girl is constantly spending time with her friends and is trying to collect as many picture-memories as she can, so that she would not feel so lonely when she is actually alone. Loneliness is her biggest fear. With time, the girl comes to an understanding that all of the parties, meet-ups, and fake friends are making her feel increasingly worse, since, at the end of the day, she is still alone. The girl’s emotional state is being represented by her surroundings. The light bulb is on – a wish to be recognized as part of society. Flickering light – rising doubts. Burned out light bulb – tiredness, an understanding that this path isn’t one for her. The light bulb exploding – inner world turmoil. A radical change of point of view and values. She does not know what to do.
The style of the animated movie is not random. For some time now, I have been creating videos for my YouTube channel, and thus, this particular movie is created in the same, recognizable style. Strict lines, simple forms, flat colors, some additions of the Japanese animation style. I have also decided to exclude any and all forms of dialogue since the turmoil is based on the girl's inner world. Outside interactions are not very important. I have tried to convey everything in a visual manner.
